Sign type guide: all illuminated letters & signs at a glance

With the Front-lit, standard letter, the LED technology sits inside a closed aluminium letter body. The side wall (return) is painted, and the face is made of opal acrylic that diffuses the light and illuminates the surface without visible hotspots. The face colour can be matched to your corporate design using coloured acrylic or vinyl.

This illuminated signage suits façades, shopping centres, petrol stations, practices and anywhere your name needs to be read from a distance. It is mounted directly on the wall, on standoffs or on a mounting rail – on rented façades the rail is often the neatest solution, as it needs only a few drill holes.

Care: wipe the face occasionally with a soft cloth and mild cleaner; do not use solvents.

Planning tip: as a rule of thumb for legibility, allow about 10 cm of letter height per 10 m of viewing distance. We check your lettering in advance for overly fine areas, suggest a bolder stroke weight if needed and show you the effect on your façade in a free design preview before production. Light colours range from warm white to cool white; coloured faces are possible with coloured acrylic or translucent vinyl.

On the Front-lit, trim cap letter, the opal acrylic face is joined to the aluminium return with a U-shaped plastic profile. This trim cap runs around every letter and forms a fine, usually coloured outline – black, white or matched to the return. The construction is proven, easy to maintain and especially cost-effective at large letter heights.

You will typically find these illuminated letters on supermarkets, car dealerships, gyms and commercial buildings – wherever large lettering needs to be visible from far away. Mounted directly on the façade, on standoffs or on a mounting rail, which can also conceal the power supply.

Note: the trim cap is visible on very fine typefaces. For delicate logos we recommend the rimless version instead.

Planning tip: the trim cap comes in several colours. Black emphasises the outline, while a colour matched to the face makes it almost disappear. For large façade lettering we recommend a mounting rail with the letters pre-mounted: this saves time on site, reduces the number of drill holes and ensures spacing and heights are exactly right. The rimless front-lit letter does without the surrounding plastic profile. The face is precisely fitted or bonded into the aluminium return, creating a clean, seamless edge. The result looks far more refined and elegant than classic channel letters.

This construction suits boutiques, hotels, law firms, showrooms and interiors with high design standards. It also works well at smaller letter heights, where a trim cap would be too dominant. Mounted directly, on standoffs or on a mounting rail.

Good to know: with an acrylic face and day/night film, the lettering looks dark by day and glows white at night – a popular effect for black logos.

Planning tip: rimless illuminated letters are the right choice if your logo has thin lines, fine serifs or tight letter spacing. The returns can be painted in a RAL colour or finished in brushed metal. With vacuum-formed front-lit letters, the face is not made from a flat sheet but thermally shaped into a three-dimensional form. Edges, domes and curves give the lettering depth and a premium, almost sculptural look. The LED technology sits inside and lights the formed face evenly.

Vacuum-formed illuminated signage is ideal for logos with rounded shapes, brand marks and façades that should stand apart from flat standard letters – for example restaurants, petrol stations or chain stores. Mounted directly, on standoffs or on a mounting rail.

Note: a mould is made for the forming. This construction is therefore especially worthwhile for distinctive logos and lettering used at several locations.

Planning tip: the dome is most effective on clear, rounded shapes. Very fine lines and sharp angles cannot be formed as deeply – here, if you wish, we combine vacuum-formed main elements with flat front-lit letters for secondary text. Face colour and gloss level are set with coloured acrylic or print. In the design preview you see in advance how the lettering looks on your façade.

On the back-lit letter – also known as halo lighting – the face is closed, usually in painted aluminium. The LEDs shine through a clear or opal back onto the wall. This creates the typical halo effect that makes the letter appear to float.

Halo-lit letters suit reception areas, hotels, medical practices, law firms, restaurants and boutiques. They look best on light, even walls, because the wall reflects the light. On very dark or heavily textured surfaces the effect is weaker.

Mounting: a back-lit letter must have clearance from the wall – it is always mounted on standoffs. The cables run through the standoffs straight into the wall, so nothing remains visible.

Planning tip: warm white light looks especially inviting on wood, plaster and natural stone; cool white looks modern and crisp. Coloured halo light is also possible. As the face stays unlit, it should contrast well with the wall – for example black on white or gold on anthracite. We show you the day and night effect in a free design preview.

These stainless steel letters are made from stainless steel sheet, welded and polished to a high gloss. Inside are LED modules that shine onto the wall through the open back or a back sealed with acrylic. The face stays closed and gleams – the light appears only as a halo.

Ideal for hotels, jewellers, law firms, beauty studios, corporate receptions and premium retail. Brushed or gold-coloured finishes are also possible if the mirror effect would be too dominant.

Mounting and care: mounted only on standoffs so that the halo can form. Clean the polished surface only with a microfibre cloth and stainless steel care product – no abrasive cleaners, otherwise scratches appear.

Planning tip: mirror-polished stainless steel shows whatever is in front of it. So make sure the area opposite the lettering is calm – in front of a white wall the shine looks especially clean. The front & back-lit letter combines two lighting effects in one letter. An opal acrylic face provides direct brightness, while a translucent back also creates the halo on the wall. The result looks three-dimensional and stays very legible in the dark.

Popular with restaurants, bars, gyms, hairdressers and shops that want a strong presence in the evening. The returns can be finished in a contrasting colour so that the lettering also makes an impact by day.

Mounting: because of the rear lighting, always on standoffs. The halo is most visible on light, smooth walls. The cables are routed through the standoffs into the wall.

Planning tip: a popular effect is a coloured face with a white halo – the lettering stays in your brand colour while the halo makes it float in front of the wall. In this version the returns are made of stainless steel – brushed, mirror-polished or gold-effect. The opal acrylic face glows forwards and the open back creates the halo effect. This brings together the presence of a front-lit letter and the elegance of stainless steel letters.

Planning tip: the combination of stainless steel returns and an opal face is especially effective with clear sans-serif typefaces and compact logos. With these acrylic letters, each letter is CNC-routed from a thick acrylic sheet. The LEDs sit on the back or in a groove and guide their light through the material. Face and side edges glow at the same time – with no visible returns.

Planning tip: with coloured or translucent-vinyl-covered acrylic, the light colour can be matched exactly to your logo. With side-lit acrylic letters, the face is covered with an opaque vinyl or paint finish. Light escapes only through the edges and outlines each letter with a crisp line of light.

Planning tip: side-lit letters work especially well against dark or medium-light walls, because the outline of light contrasts strongly there. In this version a thin metal face is applied to the acrylic body – for example brushed stainless steel, aluminium or brass effect. The face is opaque and light escapes only at the sides. By day the metal effect dominates; in the evening, the glowing outline.

Mini acrylic letters are the delicate version of illuminated letters. The acrylic is precisely CNC-routed and the LEDs are integrated flat within the letter. This keeps the letters slim while still lighting them evenly, even at small sizes.

Back-lit mini acrylic letters bring the halo effect of large back-lit letters to a slim construction. The face is covered, and the LEDs shine backwards to create a soft halo on the wall.

A light box consists of an aluminium profile frame, internal LED illumination and a printed face made of opal acrylic. The graphic is lit evenly from behind, so photos, gradients and multi-colour logos also come across well.

The double-sided light box has two printed acrylic faces lit by shared LED illumination. Both sides can be designed identically or differently.

Planning tip: with double-sided light boxes, a compact shape with a large logo is usually more effective than lots of text – passers-by only have a few seconds. On the light box with a routed face, the face is made of aluminium and painted. Letters and logo are routed out and either backed with acrylic or fitted as solid push-through acrylic parts that stand slightly proud of the face.

Planning tip: the aluminium face can be painted in any RAL colour; dark tones such as anthracite or black create the strongest contrast with the light. The recessed light box is installed in a prepared opening, for example in a drywall, counter or shelf front. The housing is hidden, and the face sits flush with the surface or stands only minimally proud.

With the vacuum-formed light box, the acrylic face is heated and drawn over a mould. This gives letters and logo depth so they glow in relief. The face is then printed or vinyl-covered.

A projecting sign (also known as a blade sign) is mounted at right angles to the building wall on a sturdy bracket. The double-sided housing is lit inside with LEDs, and both faces carry your logo – printed, vinyl-covered or with routed, back-lit letters.

Essential for cafés, hairdressers, pharmacies, bakeries, boutiques and all shops on streets with heavy foot traffic – where flat-mounted signs are barely legible from an acute angle.

Mounting: on a projecting bracket on the façade. As the sign extends into public space, projection and clearance height are often regulated locally – please check with your local authority in advance.

Planning tip: with projecting signs, long-distance impact is what counts: a large, simple logo and little text. The bracket can be plain or decorative and colour-matched to the façade or logo. With the LED neon sign on contour-cut acrylic, LED neon flex is shaped and mounted on a clear acrylic panel. The panel is then cut along the lines of light so that very little surface remains. Your sign looks like classic neon – only more economical, lighter and more robust.

Good to know: fine details such as very small lettering can only be formed in LED neon flex above a certain size. With the full panel, the acrylic is kept as a rectangle (or another basic shape). The LED neon lines sit on top, and fine elements that would be too small for neon flex can be added to the panel with UV print. This way even a detailed logo can be reproduced in full.

With brushed stainless steel letters, the surface is given an even brushed grain. This gives the metal a calm, satin sheen. The letters are made as closed 3D bodies.

Ideal for medical practices, law firms, office buildings, industry and trades. Stainless steel is weather-resistant and well suited to exterior façades.

Planning tip: brushed stainless steel suits almost any setting – from exposed concrete to wood. For a three-dimensional look we recommend letter depths of 2–5 cm and mounting on standoffs, which creates a slight shadow gap. These gold 3D letters are based on a stainless steel body whose surface is given a coloured finish. This creates a durable gold tone that is far more resistant than paint or vinyl. Rose gold, champagne or black chrome are also possible.
