Which signs does a store need?
In retail, the view from the street decides whether people stop. This combination works well:
| Where | Our recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Above the storefront windows | Storefront sign with channel letters | Your name is readable from across the street and at night. |
| At right angles to the storefront | Blade sign | On a main street, shoppers see you from the side first. |
| In the window | LED neon sign | A glowing slogan or your logo catches the eye, even after closing. |
| Behind the register | Halo-lit logo or flat cut letters | Strengthens your brand in store and in photos. |
Tips for windows and stores
- Hanging neon in the window: suspend it on wires with the lettering facing out. Plan an outlet nearby; the cable is about 6.5 ft (2 m) long as standard.
- Advertising after hours: with a timer, your window keeps glowing in the evening without anyone having to remember.
- The right size: about 1 inch of letter height per 8 feet of reading distance. To be read from across the street you need more than a small indoor sign.
- Pop-ups and trade shows: plug-in LED neon signs simply move with you.
Permits, installation and process
Exterior signs almost always need a sign permit from your city, and if you lease, your landlord's approval too. We supply a dimensioned drawing and a visual for your application. Everything arrives with mounting hardware and instructions, and illuminated signs are hardwired by a licensed electrician. If you don't have an installer, we can help you find one near you. Frequently asked questions
How do I hang a neon sign in my store window?
Ideally suspended on wires, lettering facing out, with an outlet nearby. The cable is about 6.5 ft long as standard; longer cables are available on request.
Should the sign stay on after hours?
It's often worth it, because a lit window stands out in the evening. A timer switches it automatically.
What size should my storefront lettering be?
Rule of thumb: about 1 inch of letter height per 8 feet of reading distance – roughly 8 in to be read from across a street 66 ft away.
Can you make the same sign for several locations?
Yes. We make the same design for multiple stores and adjust the size to each storefront where needed.
Do I need a permit?
For exterior signs, almost always. Rules for window signs vary by city – if in doubt, check with your permit office.
Do you install the signs?
As standard you get everything your installer needs. If you don't have one, we can help you find a sign installer near you.
