Which signs does a car dealership or auto shop need?
In the auto business, customers usually see you from a moving car. Size and reach matter more than anywhere else:
| Where | Our recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Building facade or roofline | Large channel letters | Readable from 165 ft (50 m) and more, at night too. |
| At the entrance | Double-sided light box | Visible from both directions of traffic. |
| Showroom or service bay | LED neon sign with your logo | Brand presence for customers and social media. |
| Customer lounge | Halo-lit logo or stainless steel letters | Premium and easy to keep clean. |
Tips for dealerships, auto shops and detailing
- Size by the road: the rule of thumb is about 1 inch of letter height per 8 feet of reading distance. To be read from a road 165 ft away you need letters about 20 in high.
- Car wash and detailing bays: plan signs outside the direct spray area. Outdoors, channel letters and light boxes are built weatherproof.
- Installing at height: building facades and rooflines usually need a lift or bucket truck – a job for a professional sign installer.
- Several locations: we make the same design for every location, in the right size for each.
Permits, installation and process
Large illuminated signs almost always need a sign permit and an electrical permit from your city. We supply a dimensioned drawing and a visual for your application. Everything arrives with mounting hardware and instructions, and illuminated signs are hardwired by a licensed electrician. If you don't have an installer, we can help you find one near you. Frequently asked questions
How big should the letters on a dealership be?
Rule of thumb: about 1 inch of letter height per 8 feet of reading distance – roughly 20 in for a road 165 ft away.
Will a sign survive in the car wash?
Our signs aren't designed for the direct spray area of a car wash, so plan them outside it. Outdoors, channel letters and light boxes are weatherproof.
Are there double-sided signs for the entrance?
Yes, as a double-sided light box or a blade sign, visible from both directions.
Can you fit out all our locations the same way?
Yes. We make the same design for multiple locations and adapt the size to each building.
Do I need a permit?
For large illuminated signs, almost always – a sign permit plus an electrical permit. We supply the drawing and visual for your application.
Do you install the signs?
As standard you get everything a professional installer needs. If you don't have one, we can help you find one near you.
