Which signs does a shop need?
In retail, the view from the street decides whether people stop. This combination works well:
| Where | Our recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Above the shop window | Shop front sign with illuminated letters | Your name is readable from across the street and in the evening. |
| At right angles to the frontage | Projecting sign | On a high street, shoppers see you from the side first. |
| In the window | LED neon sign | A glowing slogan or your logo catches the eye, even after closing. |
| Behind the till | Halo-lit logo or flat cut letters | Strengthens your brand in store and in photos. |
Tips for windows and shops
- Hanging neon in the window: suspend it on wires with the lettering facing out. Plan a socket nearby; the cable is 2 m long as standard.
- Advertising after closing: with a timer, your window keeps glowing in the evening without anyone having to remember.
- The right size: about 1 cm of letter height per metre of reading distance. To be read from the opposite pavement you need more than a small indoor sign.
- Pop-ups and trade fairs: plug-in LED neon signs simply move with you.
Planning permission, installation and process
Signs on the outside of the building often need advertisement consent from your council, and if you rent, your landlord's approval too. We supply a dimensioned drawing and a visual for your application. Everything arrives with fixings and instructions, and the mains connection is made by a qualified electrician. If you don't have an installer, we can help you find one near you. More in our installation guide and our overview of all sign types.
Frequently asked questions
How do I hang a neon sign in my shop window?
Ideally suspended on wires, lettering facing out, with a socket nearby. The cable is 2 m long as standard; longer cables are available on request.
Should the sign stay on after closing?
It's often worth it, because a lit window stands out in the evening. A timer switches it automatically.
What size should my fascia lettering be?
Rule of thumb: about 1 cm of letter height per metre of reading distance – around 20 cm to be read from across a street 20 m away.
Can you make the same sign for several branches?
Yes. We make the same design for multiple locations and adjust the size to each frontage where needed.
Do I need planning permission?
Often, for signs on the outside of the building. Whether window displays need consent varies by council – if in doubt, check with them.
Do you install the signs?
As standard you get everything your installer needs. If you don't have one, we can help you find a sign fitter near you.
