Illuminated Signs and LED Neon: FAQs on Design, Production, Installation and Aftercare

Design

What do you need for a quote?

Three things: your logo or lettering, ideally as a vector file, the size you have in mind, and the lighting effect: face-lit, halo-lit, both or non-illuminated. A photo of the wall or frontage helps too. If you're not sure which construction suits you, we'll advise.

Which file format is best?

A vector file (PDF, AI, EPS or SVG) with all fonts converted to outlines. A JPG or PNG is fine for a first estimate, but for production we need the exact outlines.

Can I use my own font?

Yes. Send us the font file, or your logo with the text converted to outlines. We check very fine typefaces for feasibility in the design preview.

Can you match my brand colour?

Yes. Give us your Pantone or RAL reference and we'll match face vinyls, paint and powder coating to it. For the light colour you choose from the available LED colours.

Why do you need a photo of the wall?

The photo shows us the surroundings, the architecture and the surface. That lets us plan size and fixing, and place the sign to scale on your building in the design preview.

Quote and production

Will I see the sign before it's made?

Yes. You get a free design preview, and production only starts once you approve it.

Can I change anything after approval?

Approval starts production, and after that changes usually aren't possible. So take your time with the preview and check spelling, colours and dimensions carefully.

How long does production take?

LED neon signs take about 2–3 weeks after approval, plus delivery. For all other sign types we confirm a firm delivery date in your quote.

Is the sign tested before it ships?

Yes. Every illuminated sign runs for 24 hours in a burn-in test before dispatch, so faults show up before the sign reaches you.

Are the signs suitable for outdoors?

Illuminated letters, lightboxes, projecting signs and metal letters are built weatherproof for outdoor use. LED neon signs are available splash-proof for covered areas, and moss signs are for indoors only. Tell us if your location gets strong sun or a lot of rain and we'll take it into account.

Installation

Do you install the signs?

As standard you get everything your tradesperson or sign fitter needs. If you don't have one, we can help you find an installer near you.

Which documents do I get?

For permanently installed signs, a full-size drilling template, a wiring diagram and installation notes. Our installation guide walks through the process step by step.

Which fixings are included?

Threaded studs, washers and nuts for letters; stand-offs or a hanging kit for LED neon. Your installer chooses wall plugs to suit the wall on site.

Do I need an electrician?

For permanently installed, mains-connected signs such as illuminated letters, lightboxes and illuminated projecting signs, yes. LED neon signs and indoor halo-lit signs come with a plug-in adapter.

Do I need planning permission?

Often, yes, for signs on the outside of a building, especially illuminated ones and in conservation areas. Check with your council first. We supply a dimensioned drawing and a visual for your application.

Aftercare

What warranty do I get?

LED neon signs come with a 24-month warranty. The terms for other sign types are set out in your quote.

What if something stops working?

First check that the plug, driver and, if there is one, the remote are connected properly. If that doesn't help, write to us with your order number and a photo or short video, and we'll sort out a solution.

How do I look after my sign?

Use a soft, slightly damp cloth, without solvents or harsh cleaners. Keep indoor signs away from constant moisture.

What if the sign isn't used for a while?

Switch it on for one to two hours every two to three weeks. That keeps the electronics in good condition.
