Which signs does a car dealership or garage need?
In the motor trade, customers usually see you from a moving car. Size and reach matter more than anywhere else:
| Where | Our recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Building frontage or roofline | Large illuminated letters | Readable from 50 m and more, at night too. |
| At the entrance | Double-sided lightbox | Visible from both directions of traffic. |
| Showroom or workshop | LED neon sign with your logo | Brand presence for customers and social media. |
| Customer area | Halo-lit logo or stainless steel letters | Premium and easy to keep clean. |
Tips for dealerships, garages and valeting
- Size by the road: the rule of thumb is 1 cm of letter height per metre of reading distance. To be read from a main road 50 m away you need letters about 50 cm high.
- Wash bays and valeting: plan signs outside the direct spray area. Outdoors, illuminated letters and lightboxes are built weatherproof.
- Installing at height: building frontages and rooflines usually need a mobile elevated work platform – a job for a professional sign fitter.
- Several sites: we make the same design for every branch, in the right size for each.
Planning permission, installation and process
Large illuminated signs on a building or entrance often need advertisement consent from your council. We supply a dimensioned drawing and a visual for your application. Everything arrives with fixings and instructions, and the mains connection is made by a qualified electrician. If you don't have an installer, we can help you find one near you. Frequently asked questions
How big should the letters on a dealership be?
Rule of thumb: 1 cm of letter height per metre of reading distance – around 50 cm for a road 50 m away.
Will a sign survive in the wash bay?
Our signs aren't designed for the direct spray area of a car wash, so plan them outside it. Outdoors, illuminated letters and lightboxes are weatherproof.
Are there double-sided signs for the entrance?
Yes, as a double-sided lightbox or a projecting sign, visible from both directions.
Can you fit out all our branches the same way?
Yes. We make the same design for multiple sites and adapt the size to each frontage.
Do I need planning permission?
For large illuminated signs, usually yes. We supply the drawing and visual for your application.
Do you install the signs?
As standard you get everything a professional fitter needs. If you don't have one, we can help you find an installer near you.
