Do I need consent for an illuminated sign in Glasgow?Scottish rules and Glasgow's signage guidance

Glasgow City Council is the planning authority; applications go through ePlanning Scotland under the Control of Advertisements (Scotland) Regulations 1984. The council's guidance on signs and advertising says:

  • Shopfront signage should be limited to fascia and projecting signs, judged on visual amenity and public safety.
  • Illuminated fascia signs should be individually lit letters or lit by a painted-out trough light; non-recessed box fascia signs are not supported.
  • Projecting signs should be modest – generally no more than 0.5 m² per face, one per frontage, preferably unlit (or internally lit), at least 2.25 m above the pavement on traditional tenements and none above ground floor.
  • Listed buildings and conservation areas need a higher standard of design; listed buildings also need listed building consent.
