Do I need a permit for an illuminated sign in Brisbane?Advertising Devices Local Law 2021
In Brisbane, signs are regulated by Brisbane City Council's Advertising Devices Local Law 2021; you apply for an advertising device approval online. According to the council:
- Self-assessable signs: small businesses in business areas can use some sign types without approval – not in the Queen Street or Valley Malls, or where a heritage or commercial character overlay applies.
- Projecting signs: vertical ones project up to 750 mm and are up to 7.5 m high; horizontal ones up to 1.5 m projection, 0.5 m high; at least 2.4 m clearance and no higher than 10 m.
- Awning signs: fascia signs up to 600 mm high; under-awning signs up to 2.5 × 0.5 × 0.3 m.
- Illuminated signs must also meet the council's Advertising Devices Technical Standards.
- Heritage places always need approval; state-listed sites also need state approval.
Sources: Brisbane City Council – advertising device approval, as of October 2026. This is not legal advice – the local authority makes the final decision.
