Do I need consent for an illuminated sign in Christchurch?District Plan Chapter 6.8, building consent, public land
Christchurch City Council manages signs through Chapter 6.8 (Signs) of the Christchurch District Plan. According to the council:
- Resource consent: a sign needs resource consent if it does not comply with the rules in Chapter 6.8. The council's duty planner can tell you whether your sign is likely to need one (dutyplanner@ccc.govt.nz).
- Building consent: formal building approval is not required if the design is carried out or reviewed by a chartered professional engineer, or if no face of the sign is larger than 6 m² and the top of the sign is no more than 3 m above the supporting ground. Signs and their supports must comply with the Building Code either way.
- Public land: under the Public Places Bylaw, signage for commercial activities on or fixed to a public place needs the council's written permission.
- Home-based business: in a residential zone, the maximum sign area is 0.5 m².
Heritage buildings: Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga keeps the New Zealand Heritage List, and the District Plan has its own heritage schedule. If your building is listed, ask the council before fixing anything to it. Many Central City premises have been rebuilt in recent years, so also check any signage conditions in your lease or building consent.
