How Much Does a Shop Sign Cost? What Drives the Price
Share
"How much does a shop sign cost?" is the question we hear most, usually before anyone has decided what the sign should be. The honest answer depends on what's being built. Every sign is made to order, and two signs of the same width can take very different amounts of work. So instead of a price list, this guide explains what drives the price of a shop sign, where you can trim the specification sensibly, and how to get a firm quote quickly. To see the constructions side by side, start with all shop sign types.
In short
The cost of a shop sign comes down to the construction, the size and letter height, the number of letters, how it's lit and the materials. On top of that come fitting, access, the electrician and the signage permit. You only get a reliable figure with your logo, a photo of the frontage and the dimensions, which is exactly what our free design preview and quote are built on.
Why a price per letter doesn't work
Picture two fascia signs, both 3 metres wide. One is a lightbox with your logo printed on the face. The other is a run of sixteen individually built, halo-lit letters, each with its own aluminium return, its own LEDs and its own wiring. Same width, completely different job.
That's why "from AED X per letter" tables mislead. They're accurate for one sample font at one height and then don't fit your logo. We price every sign individually, from your artwork and your wall.
What drives the price of a shop sign
1. The construction
This is the biggest lever. For a detailed comparison, see lightbox vs sign tray vs built-up letters. Roughly in order of work involved:
- A non-illuminated fascia panel in aluminium with print or vinyl. The leanest option, and just as readable in daylight.
- A lightbox: one cabinet, one face, LED modules behind it. Efficient for large areas, because the whole face is built as one unit. See our lightbox signs.
- Individual built-up letters: every letter is a small fabrication in its own right, with return, face, back and LEDs. More handwork, and the most premium look on a frontage. See our illuminated letters.
- Front and halo-lit letters: face and halo lit separately, often in two colours. The most involved build, because each letter carries two lighting systems. Worth it on dark or textured walls; see front & halo-lit letters for dark walls.
LED neon is the exception: text signs can be configured online with the price shown as you go, and logos are quoted from your file. More on our LED neon signs page.
2. Size and letter height
More area means more material, more LEDs and bigger drivers. How big the sign needs to be depends on the viewing distance. Our rule of thumb: 1 cm of letter height per metre. If people should read your name from across the road at 30 metres, that's letters about 30 cm tall. Our guide to sign letter height and viewing distance shows how to work it out for your location.
Size also decides which parts can light up at all. We build face-lit letters from about 15 cm high and front and halo-lit letters from about 10 cm. Finer strap lines are done as flat cut letters or UV print instead. A larger format brings that line into the light as well, and costs more. Turn it round and you have a fair way to a leaner quote: the strap line stays visible in print, just without LEDs. The minimum heights for each construction are set out in which parts of a sign light up.
3. Number of letters and the complexity of the logo
With built-up letters, every character counts. "ATELIER" is seven letters; "The Old Bakery Coffee House" is twenty-three. Logos with fine lines, counters and detail need contour cutting and careful lighting for each part. A compact symbol is usually simpler to build than an ornate script.
4. How it's lit
Face-lit, halo-lit or both; one colour or RGB; one light colour or separate colours for face and halo. Each option changes the build. With RGB, the whole sign changes colour together, not letter by letter. Extras such as day/night vinyl (black by day, glowing white at night) or illuminated acrylic returns are possible and priced in.
5. Materials and finish
Acrylic, painted or powder-coated aluminium in your RAL colour, brushed or polished stainless steel, brass or copper effect. For a reception logo, halo-lit letters with a metal-effect acrylic face are an elegant alternative to solid metal.
6. Indoor or outdoor
A sign on the front of the building has to cope with UAE heat, dust and strong UV for years. Weatherproof cabinets and exterior-rated LEDs take more work than a sign for a reception wall. LED neon comes in a splash-proof version for covered outdoor areas.
7. Fitting, height and access
A fascia at 2.5 metres can be fitted from a ladder or a tower. Lettering above the first floor needs scaffolding or a cherry picker, and on a busy street the relevant authority may need to approve the access equipment. Those are separate costs. The wall matters too: brick and concrete are straightforward, while externally insulated walls need special fixings that carry the load through to the masonry. A mounting rail saves holes and keeps the cabling tidy.
We don't fit signs ourselves. Your delivery comes with a full-size drilling template, a wiring diagram and the fixings, and if you don't have a fitter, we'll help you find one locally. Our installation guide shows how the job goes.
8. The electrician
Illuminated letters, lightboxes and illuminated projecting signs run from a driver on the mains, and the connection is made by a qualified electrician. Work out where the driver will sit and how far it is to a supply. LED neon signs don't need an electrician: they come with a plug-in adapter, the cable is 2 m as standard, and longer cables are made on request.
9. The signage permit
Exterior shop signs in the UAE need a permit from the relevant authority, which comes with a fee and is usually renewed with your trade licence. Our guide to signage permits in the UAE explains when you need it. The dimensioned drawing and the visual for your application come with your quote.
What should be in a quote
When you compare quotes, compare more than the total. Ask every supplier the same things:
- Will you see a design preview on your own frontage before anything is made?
- Are the driver, fixings, drilling template and wiring diagram included?
- Are delivery, duties and taxes included, or will there be a bill at the door?
- What's the warranty, and is the sign tested before it ships?
Here's how it works with us. The design preview is free, and production only starts once you've approved it. Every illuminated sign runs for 24 hours in a burn-in test before dispatch. Delivery to the UAE is duties and taxes paid, so there's nothing extra to pay on arrival. LED neon signs come with a dimmer, a remote and a 24-month warranty, and take about 2–3 weeks to make after approval; for every other sign type, your quote states the delivery date.
Where to trim the specification, not the quality
We don't cut corners on materials or build quality. If the budget is tighter, we'd rather adjust the specification: a smaller or simpler sign built properly looks better than a big one where savings show. The levers:
- Go a size down. The real viewing distance often allows it. The design preview shows how it looks on your wall.
- Light fewer elements. Keep the name in LED and put the strap line in UV print or flat cut letters. The print is there regardless, so the sign still looks complete.
- One lighting method, not two. On a light wall, pure halo or pure face-lit is often enough.
- Change the construction. For a long name, a lightbox or a panel within shop front signs & fascias can make more sense than individual letters.
- Prepare the fitting. Have the supply run in advance, and share scaffolding with other work on the frontage.
How to get an accurate quote
- Send your logo, ideally as a vector file (PDF, AI, EPS or SVG). A JPG or PNG is fine to start.
- A straight-on photo of the frontage or wall, with one known measurement in it, such as the door width.
- The space available and the fitting height.
- Indoor or outdoor, and the lighting effect you have in mind. If you're not sure, we'll advise.
- Your deadline, for example an opening date.
From that we build a design preview: your sign to scale on your own photo, showing clearly which parts light up and which are printed, with a firm quote alongside.
Common questions
Can I get a rough price range first?
We'd rather give you a real price for your sign. With a logo and a photo it doesn't take long, and you plan with a figure that holds.
What does it cost to run?
Very little. LED is efficient; a mid-sized lightbox usually draws under 50 watts. A timer means the sign is only on when people can see it.
Is the design preview really free?
Yes, and there's no obligation. You decide afterwards whether to order.
Your price, for your sign
Upload your logo and a photo of your frontage through the free design preview. You'll get a visual on your own building and a firm quote, without the guesswork. More answers are in our illuminated signs FAQ.
